Re: Slow HDD on resuming from hibernate?

DIV03 - not really odd at all - now that i have all the prog/apps i will put on the n10, all the deletions in sys32 i do not need, and other tweaking getting rid of bloat programs windows 7 gives you etc..  basically i have done a vlite in w7 without using vlite, i will do a vlite later.
i only have 5 start up items, that i think i need

NOW if i could just figure out how delete all the drivers i do not need especially printers 98% of them, the only way i know hoe to do this in the most efficient manner is a product like vlite

anyway, now my res from hibernate has increased to about 1m 5 sec,  start up to desktop about 1min 15-20 sec.  need to change this in my profile   sad   still better than w vista   smile

I am getting used to W7, but only gripe is side bar keeps failing, and have to start it again or shut it down.  Neverhad that problem with Vista    sad

Re: Slow HDD on resuming from hibernate?

I thought the Sidebar was cancelled for Windows 7 and the widgets just float freely on the desktop? It works that way on my desktop machine...

Don't make me "touch" you :-D

yes it is, however, if you look at your start up menu, it refers to it as sidebar.exe
i think the side bar is still there, but it is hidden, and no lines are there that were before, hidden in the background. you can still place your gadgets where you want, but for some reason i have not been able to figure a way to pin them to the task bar or attach to the start menue which would be nice   big_smile

Re: Slow HDD on resuming from hibernate?

I only skimmed the thread and one thing I didn't see mentioned is that fragmentation, and crap in your hiberfil.sys file can effect the speed of how fast your PC or N10 wakes up from Hibernation mode.

The hiberfil.sys file is an image of everything in memory written to a pre allocated file on your HD, and can also contain hive memory fragments similar to the Windows Registry -- what this means is though they image may not be physically fragmented on the drive it will be inside the image which can effect read speed, and how what's read gets allocated in memory.

If I recall correctly the Windows defragmenter can not always properly defragment or optimally place the hiberfil.sys file, but there are defragmeters that can like Perfect Disk and MyDefrag which is free that can... You can also disable hibernation, delete your hiberfil.sys file, then defrag your drive with the Windows Defragmenter, then renable Hibernation and it should recreate an unfragmented preallocated space for your next Hibernation memory image dump.

Lastly, minimizing the amount of crap in memory and how fragmented what is in RAM can speed how fast your system Hibernates, and wakes up; if you close all your programs and use one of the many free memory defragmenters or free VBS scripts that basically flush all extraneous stuff cached in RAM to your disk before you Hibernate it can speed things up, and help you trouble-shoot to find poorly behaved applications that really slow Hibernation down due to the way they use memory...
