Topic: Windows 7 - Performance (version = starter?)

Hi,  I'm considering getting Win 7 for the N10J...

I think the netbook version is called Win 7 Starter...?  How is everyone's feeling regarding it's performance?  Does it work better than Vista?

Re: Windows 7 - Performance (version = starter?)

You can't buy Windows 7 Starter Edition, it only ships with new system. You can get Home Premium or Professional edition.

Yes, it is definately better than Vista. At least the startup is much faster.

Re: Windows 7 - Performance (version = starter?)

I'm using Ulitimate since I got my N10. I would not consider Starter, Ultimate is just as snappy, as a fresh XP on my N10, so why go with the dumb version? smile Also I dont think there is much performance difference between HomePremium, Professional or Ultimate editions.

HELLZ  YEAH

Part of Windows 7’s job is to reclaim the netbook market from XP. This will extend to Microsoft creating a separate Windows 7 Netbook Edition for OEMs in which the operating system is stripped back and streamlined for netbooks.

sorrry ahnfire my email was wrong

zdanee - i have premium and professional - and i see no difference in performance period - i think ultimate only adds  bitlocker and maybe prettier icons etc..

i boot to usable desktop in about 45 seconds - but my desktop with professional - freezes occasionally when on the web or on resume - STRANGE.   tongue

Win7 prices list in Italy:
Home Premium 129 Euro;
Professional 299 Euro;
Ultimate 319 Euro.

In Microsoft are crazy if they think that i'll throw away this lot of money for Win7, i'll go on with the XP-Pro that i have, and with Linux that is free.

Re: Windows 7 - Performance (version = starter?)

Well, that's only true when you buy retail versions. But why the hell would you want do do that? I just bought an Ultimate upgrade version for about €120, installed a Clean Install very nicely. In fact, i'm posting from my new Windows 7 Ultimate x64 right now  big_smile

Oh... is the Atom chip 64-bit?  Why did I think it was 32-bit?  Does Win 7 come with both 32 and 64?

The prices list is relative at the upgrade version.
The retail versions are 20 euro up to upgrade version.

Mac OS X Snow Leopard upgrade at 29 euro, it's Microsoft  policy of selling that's wrong.

Re: Windows 7 - Performance (version = starter?)

No, you just can't compare Apple and Microsoft. Apple sells OS X primarily to sell their computers, they are first and formost a hardware company. Microsoft is considerably bigger, and they do all kinds of stuff, but their core-business is still software development as in Windows and Office.

You just can't expect Microsoft to sell Windows for the same prices as Apple does with Mac OSX, because Apple makes the bulk of it's profit by selling you the machine itself (ever saw a 500Gb hard-disc that costs about $300, besides from Apple  lol ?).

And for all you doubters: I know the Atom is 32bit. The Win7 Ultimate x64 is running on my desktop PC, so I'm officially ex-XP user. I'm looking into what version to get for my N10, high doubts between Home Premium and Professional.

And still, I seem to find much more affordable prices. I found several stores selling Windows Home Premium OEM for €75-€90 (which is around $100), Professional OEM around €100 and Ultimate around €150. Upgrade prices range from €50-€70 on top of that, and retail prices are usually double the price of an OEM. It all depends on where you look. And seriously, my country is kind of known for high prices when it comes to IT-things (ignoring NZ, that was a shocker to me  big_smile ).
