Topic: 4gb of ram, works or not???

hola

i just put on windows 7 and i was thinking to put 4gb of ram to make it run smoother, for instance right now that i am writing this post win7 allocates 730mb of phisycal RAM, the pc runs pretty smooth but i feel that having some more ram it will be better.

i know about the 32 bit yada yada and i know it will then only "see" 3.25gb but my question is: does the motherboard read a 4 gb correctly so she understands that there are 4 and not 2?

i didn't yet open the asus, i believe there is just one slot for the ram, so the only solution for this would be to add ONE 4gb chip, am i correct?

found a decent price on ebay for a corsair 4gb chip @ 100 euro (150 usd more or less)

i have a n10j, thanks a lot

Re: 4gb of ram, works or not???

for the note, i am not doing "crazy" tasks with that kind of memory allocation, let's say average web stuff plus some stuff in the taskbar but nothing "overloaded".

Re: 4gb of ram, works or not???

finally, right now my stock ram is the following:

PC-2 5300 @ 333 mhz... can i put on faster ram such as for example SODIMM DDR2 4GB 800MHZ ?

Re: 4gb of ram, works or not???

Unfortunately not. One of users here (web3221) tried this very task and was unable to have the motherboard recognize it.

Re: 4gb of ram, works or not???

Nope, the N10 only has one DIMM-slot and the chipset can only recognize 2Gb/module (or per channel). So 2 Gb is effectively the most you'll ever be able to put in. Faster RAM won't do you any good as well, 533Mhz is all it will run at (unless you OC by raising the FSB, but even then you won't get much higher than 667Mhz).

Also, don't mix the numbers of RAM-speeds. There are different speed indications that all point to the same speed.
For example:
400Mhz: the true RAM-speed (based on the FSB:RAM divider, which for the N10 is normally 1:2 or 133Mhz:266Mhz)
DDR 800Mhz: the virtual RAM-speed, because DDR does two operations per clock-cycle
PC-6400: the virtual RAM-speed multiplied by 8 (1 byte = 8 bits) or true RAM-speed multiplied by 16 (2 bytes = 16 bits), to express the I/O throughput.

So the RAM in the N10 is running at 266Mhz (533Mh, roughly PC-4200), while the RAM-module itself is capable of 333Mhz (667Mhz, PC-5300). There are some users (I was one of them) that had the FSB:RAM mysteriously set to 2:5, leading to the RAM running at 333Mhz, but since I flashed a newer BIOS, mine has returned to the normal 1:2 (FSB:RAM, 133Mhz:266Mhz). There's no way an 800Mhz-module would help at all, unless you get your FSB over 180Mhz...

Re: 4gb of ram, works or not???

well, i have stable right now OC @ fsb 179 and 2100 mhz without any issue a part some programs that can't install. just lower that to stock and works sweet.

thanks for the Ram info though.

Re: 4gb of ram, works or not???

but am i wrong or not, didn't some users here install the 4gb module and then the OS recognized 3gb and something, which is correct for 32 bit??

Re: 4gb of ram, works or not???

There was one user once that claimed it working, but we haven't heard from him since so I think he was lying about that one. The 945-chipset just can't handle more than 2Gb/channel. There are some desktop motherboards that had this chipset with a modified memory controller that supported dual-channel, so you could insert two 2Gb-modules. But this is just impossible in the N10 because we only have one DIMM-slot and so only one channel.

I really don't think putting in faster RAM will do any good. Saying some programs refuse to install at FSB 179Mhz already shows the system isn't rock-solid anymore at that speed. And that won't be because of the RAM-module. The stock RAM is rated for 667Mhz operation, and nearly all RAM-modules can run stressed at one step higher in the ladder => the stock should be able to handle 750-800Mhz. With FSB@179Mhz, yours is only running at 716Mhz...

But hey, I'm not stopping you. It's just that there've been other users that tried this and it didn't allow them to OC more or more stable, not even 1 single MHZ more...

Re: 4gb of ram, works or not???

here are some choices for a possible work around that workson some computers, it is from these guys from russia i believe, there are actualy 2 one for xp and w7, but now i cannot find the xp one, sorry its out here on son guys blog. belog is main google search, and couple shortcuts i liked.

http://www.google.com/search?q=readyfor … e=&oe=

above link and some of the different entries will show you how to do it, the below link is a download for the w7 version, but there are many of these in the google search

i tried last year, i am not doing it again, i have no idea if it will work or not for the n10, personally i doubt it, but what the hay - been wrong before   hmm

Here's what I don't get: HP held a contest which they gave away a Mini 311 with 3GB of ram

neutral

I guess Ion can support 4GB of ram? Might it be at an advantage over our N10?

Re: 4gb of ram, works or not???

Yes, ION can support it, but again that's because the 2Gb/module is a chipset limitation. The greatest weakness of the Intel Atom platform is the Intel 945GSE-chipset, it soaks about 8x as much power as the Atom (which is ridicolous) and it is freakin old. The ION-platform is not only the addition of a better IGP, it's the replacement of the entire chipset. And the nForce 9400M-chipset is way newer, so it supports 4Gb/channel (and I think it should even support 8Gb/channel, but not sure about that one).

there's an older threat with a guy who tried g-skill 4GB on the n10j and get 3gb out of it. not sure..

Re: 4gb of ram, works or not???

no one has ever duplicated that alleged, success, asked him to duplicate his findings, and never heard from him again.  the offer is still out there, get one 4gb memory stick to work ( i do not care if it only reads 3.0-3.5 gb), to work, i have 50 dolllars to put in your pocket, only disclaimer - it must be duplicated and verifiable.    cool
