Re: Alienware M11x, a better alternative to the N10 (moreso than UL30vt!)

? i have read both ways, is the m11x, an 11" or 11.6" screen.    hmm   it has been advertised both ways, what is the truth (viewable size)?   neutral

from Darkjeric,   (which is AZERTY, no Alienware has ever been available in AZERTY. But maybe now that they're Dell, it'll be possible...).

is qwerty board just a U.S. thing - i have heard of different keyboards for various countries (i figured it was more of an alphabet thing)   tongue  , but never azerty,  frick i can't type on the one i have, let alone some other type of keyboard !

Re: Alienware M11x, a better alternative to the N10 (moreso than UL30vt!)

Don't forget about the new HP tablet! I'm waiting for some reviews from all three machines really.

HP TouchSmart tm2
12.1"
Wacom Digitizer
Core 2 Duo CULV 1.3GHz
Mobility Radeon 4550 or Intel GMA 4500
4.72 lbs

I'm concerned about the battery life/heat. I suspect they'll be abysmal with the radeon GPU, but decent with the intel integrated. switchable graphics could have sealed the deal here imo

*edit*

wow apparently it has switchable graphics according to one review, I'm skeptical that their info is wrong though so I'll wait for others to come around. However battery life lasted 5-5.5 hours with intel graphics while surfing with WiFi on and brightness to 70%, so yeah.

Re: Alienware M11x, a better alternative to the N10 (moreso than UL30vt!)

@Web: Azerty is indeed another keyboard lay-out. It was made for the French-language, making some commonly used accents more easily accessible than Qwerty-lay-out. In fact, this is a bit stupid as Belgium has three main languages (Dutch, French and German), and I'm part of the Dutch-speaking part called Flandres. For Dutch, azerty makes actually no sense at all since it is very related to German and English, but for some reason everybode started using Azerty over here. And I got so used to it it's almost impossible for me to type on qwerty-layouts. I always type q/a, z/w and ?/m mistakes.

You can see some different lay-outs over here (Azerty being the third): http://www.ndc.co.uk/keyboard_layouts.php#GBP

@Div: that's an interesting contender! About the same battery life as my N10 but some more performance. Plus it has a better touchscreen implementation than my N10  lol It is kinda heavy though, and a bit expensive too for my liking. It costs $400 more than the Asus UL30Vt when getting the same configuration...

Yeah cost and battery life make me consider the UL30vt/jt over it really. I've really gotten used to my N10's 8-9 hour battery life!  big_smile

But of course the big plus here is the touch screen, and being a digital artist I'd want one for work...

I just wish we had a better screen option for the UL series... That's ALL.

Re: Alienware M11x, a better alternative to the N10 (moreso than UL30vt!)

Well, to be honest, the idea is kind of growing on me. I hope sincerely that it will be switchable GPU. I get the idea it is from the HP store, the option is called 'Intel 4500M HD/ HD4550', so it kinda implies they're both in there. It seems like something that could really replace my N10, if they indeed get the battery life of about 9hrs (7hrs would be good too, but less would be undesirable for such an expensive device).

It would even be a lot more convenient, as you can lay the screen flat. I do all kinds of stuff with my N10 since it has a touch screen, like reading books in PDF and scrolling through with my finger, reading comics on it, etc. I do that by tilting the screen 90°, so the keyboard is kind of in the way. This HP thing would be heaven to read on (screen is a little bigger too, sometimes the letters in comics are REALLY small on the N10 lol ). Plus it packs a lot more power than the N10 can provide...

I'll see how much it costs when it's released here, but I'm very interested!

Re: Alienware M11x, a better alternative to the N10 (moreso than UL30vt!)

The m11x is a great machine as it appears. I agree with Darkjeric on the screen issue, I think a 13" would be best on this kind of machine but the 11" seems quite enjoyable to. Thanks to the n10, I've become a great fan of small laptops, honestly I am unable to use my 17" dell anymore (well he is growing old too but anyways). And to anyone who may be interested in : the m11x has the azerty option, in fact the only one not available is the m17 sad. I am seriously thinking of having this baby but my main concern is about how powerful the machine will be in different tasks. Is the processor SU7300 powerful enough to be at ease with everything our brave n10 fails for now. (Or will it be wiser to wait till summer to see if they'll upgrade the cpu with i3 or i5 processors as originally intended). Notably the streaming hd content, or any other video format that we can't configure with Mpc-hc. I hear you all saying why bother, how many times I tried to stream hd content or even launched anything with Quictime videos. The trouble is when such a budget is required, I would like to have everything covered. But seriously the m11x is awesome.

Re: Alienware M11x, a better alternative to the N10 (moreso than UL30vt!)

would love to know more about it, but for now my n10 is my god, who knows later in the year something may come along that beats the tits off the n10, but i doubt it.  lots of good stuff is coming, though , i know. just gotta see it happen, then i will consider.   tongue  some day the n10 will have to go, but it will almost take an act of god to make me move in another direction.   big_smile

I totally understand what you mean and believe me I feel the same way. The n10 is like an addiction smile I mean its perfect (plus considering the steal price I paid for it it's unbelievable). If only it was a little bit more powerful I wouldn't even look into anything else. In the beginning the resolution was the biggest issue for me, but what... It was no longer a problem at the end of the day. I don't know, even if I buy the m11x, it is going to be primarily stationary at home and I will take the n10 everywhere with me like right now. That's why I am hoping that the machine is worth paying the price he has and can be a little more all around performer than our fellow n10.
But I am with you on the fact that the n10 is one of the most underrated netbooks around.
