Topic: Moblin v2.1 on N10Jc

I have recently tried installing moblin on the Asus N10Jc netbook. The installation went fine, given had to manually make partition in windows first. The installation for Moblin is pretty fast.
The boot time is real good. It is as good as the ExpressGate boot time. The interface of Moblin is also very nice. However, the WiFi connection dropped when i tried to install any app using its App manager. After doing a update, I don't face the problem anymore. Though it may still randomly disconnect the wifi. But thats rare. The battery consumption i guess is less then the XP.

One thing important, Moblin won't work if graphics card is switched on. It doesn't even boot in my case. It needs intel on board graphics, to work. The Fn shortcut keys all work. You may not get the OSD notification, but it will still work, except the LifeFrame key, and the Splendid Video key.

On top of that, you need to know linux well to make XViD and mp3 files, plus ntfs support to work.
Moblin is basically a heavily modified Fedora 10. But still, its snappier boot times, and its UI are something you will like. I only use it when i simply need to surf or chat on yahoo.

Am going to try JoliCloud and Ubuntu 9.10 NBR next. Btw, Ubuntu 9.10 NBR is the best performer in benchmarks for netbooks, in terms of Battery Usage, Memory Usage, processing power.
Any questions are welcome.

Re: Moblin v2.1 on N10Jc

Hey,

A few questions:

-I'm unhappy with express gate, i cannot have native screen resolution (1024*600). With this SO can you get this resolution?
-Does it really beats the 10 seconds express gate boot time?
-What is the fastest SO and the easysest to install from all that you've refered?
-Any install from windows 7?

Thanks smile

-Yes, the resolution is native. Moblin is so simple, you actually won't have to change much settings.
-No it does not beat the 10 sec boot. But, yes you get a 15-20 sec boot, which is not bad if you are getting a full fledged operating system. At present, Moblin is the fastest booting OS for the netbook platform.
-Moblin is really easy to install. If you need detailed help, I will provide it. And, yes, Moblin is the fastest to boot. However, if you are considering after the boot performance, Ubuntu NBR takes all the top positions in benchmarks for Battery Usage, HD video FPS, Low Idle processor usage, Low overall battery consumption, Lower time for compressing files, RAM usage, etc.
-If you are asking that whether I have installed Moblin through Windows, well No. I boot from my pendrive to install, which is much more better. If you were asking whether I tested installing Windows 7, well I won't. Windows can't achieve half of what Linux can do. These all specially tailored Linux Distros for NetBooks are really great.

Hope i have answered all your questions satisfactorily. big_smile. Have a nice time!

Re: Moblin v2.1 on N10Jc

Btw, forgot to mention, many of the speed enhancements which Ubuntu has over Moblin, while the OS is running, are due to the fact that Ubuntu 9.10 uses Ext4 filesystem instead of Moblin's Ext3, which provides greater performance. For detailed benchmark results, goto this link :

Well, if you consider replacing ExpressGate, I think you should go for Moblin.

Re: Moblin v2.1 on N10Jc

Hello again,

Installed Ubuntu netbook remix. It's ok, almost everything worked out of the box.
It has one anoying thing, it's always asking me the password... besides that i think is a cool SO.

I probably wont try mobilin until it get a little bit more mature.

Thanks

I had the same problem with Ubuntu NBR, uninstalled it and installed the Ubuntu 9.10 all works right. I think that the problem with Nvidia was because the NBR is developed only for netbooks that have integrated graphics and not support other graphic card.

I had crash also with Jolycloud for the same problem.

Re: Moblin v2.1 on N10Jc

Another really fast booting SO:
http://www.xpud.org/

Its a little buggy, but for web navigation i think is ideal... i thing its faster than expressgate...

Just one problem i cannot install it to hard drive, just to pen drive... tried windows install and no success... if any one get how to install it on hard drive please post

Re: Moblin v2.1 on N10Jc

Tested mobilin, and i confirm the wireless problem... in 5 minutes wireless lost...

It's a nice looking SO, to be used every day... but i think xPUD is the best one from what i've tested.

The XP install worked for me without any problems?

Is there a way that we can use the expressgate button to boot up xPud? I think it is really good too.

Re: Moblin v2.1 on N10Jc

I think the problem is only with windows 7, a hidden partition is making things difficult...

Overall i think express gate is still the best one...

Re: Moblin v2.1 on N10Jc

Well, XPud, i cant say much about it. I still prefer linux. The nVidia problem in NBR, i guess as stated could be the NBR repositories not containing necessary packages. As such, there should be a solution to that problem. To get rid of the Moblin wireless disconnection problem, please perform a update after installing it. Then i can guarantee the connection remains stable. Overall, i think i like Moblin for its speed, and Ubuntu for its functionality. Btw, I presume the Expressgate button is hardcoded to boot the first hidden partition. And i like the ExpressGate better then the XPuD i guess. After all, its custom designed for this netbook itself. Moreover, I will see if i can get the nVidia working in the NBR. NBR is simply just ubuntu, with changed graphics and a repository.

Re: Moblin v2.1 on N10Jc

I've founded a thread where some users explain how to change express gate resolution and how to gain access to one shell:

http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11610

If any one could change the express gate resolution with intel graphic card to 1024*600 it would be great!

Re: Moblin v2.1 on N10Jc

I use a dual boot Moblin / Win 7 on my n10j

Works great.  Moblin CAN actually run most software out there, the problem is that its a pain to install if it's not in the standard Moblin repo and you don't know Linux well (speaking a a Linux n00b)

It can be done, though.  For example, I run Wine to use a few Windows only apps I need, as well as Skype and a few other major Linux apps, like Textmaker.

For most installs (after you have your compiler installed and all) it's basically just:

1.  Download the Fedora package
2.  Do a YUM install WITH the "nogpgcheck" option. For example:

sudo yum localinstall fluendo-codecs-mp3-11-3.i386.prm --nogpgcheck

Haven't had much trouble installing anything after i learned this.
