Topic: 3g

i use a 3g hsdpa  dongle but would rather have it built into the n10 i wouldnt know where to start to do this so was wondering if anyone else had thought about it or looked into it

a wifi module that also did 3g would be nice

the dongle i use is a t mobile one and always seems to be very hot and the connection seems to always drop

if the n10 had a better resolution and 3g it would be he ultimate netbook for me.

im also waiting to see what the specs will be for this asus ul30vt if it ever comes out.

Re: 3g

3g finally built in \0/  big_smile

took a couple of hours to do this as i wasnt sure on what i was doing really just kept going lol

i stripped apart my 3g usb stick and fit it inside the laptop right next to the ram it seem to fit snuggly there, also i connected the grey spare wire to the antenna on it and the connection so far seems to be pretty good but its hard to tell really as it also depends on the coverage.

i had to soldur onto the usb connections on the 3g stick a new wire so i could run it internally around and to a usb port

so far all seems to be good i will keep a check on the heat of the laptop too since there is less space inside for the air to flow around

if anyone is interested i can upload some pictures later.

Re: 3g

i will get some pictures put up on here and for the how to guide it really isnt anything major but i can explain what i did

i have the cable poking out the side like darkjeric has on his touchscreen mod. i plan on also doing the touch screen mod at some point and have it coming out the side so i can turn it off when i want.

i was also thinking of solduring some kind of usb switcher so i can switch between both the 3g mod and the touch screen or turn both of them off i dont think that will be hard to do its just time really and some solduring skills lol which im not the greatest at.

i will post some pictures today just waiting on the camera to charge.

oh forgot i left it on all night with eve running and and the 3g module  running and i didnt see much difference in the temps.

Re: 3g

the 3g usb stick next to the ram

i just ordered a touch screen panel kit so the 3g module can connect directly to that so no wires will be outside.

Can you explain a little bit more about this ? I'm looking forwards to add a touch screen to my N10 too, and I'm wondering how to connect it without have wires outside.
If you manage to do it, remember to make a guide, with some nice pictures, it would be a lot useful !

Re: 3g

This is great! You'll have some problems adding the touch-controller though, the 3G-thing apparantly seems to take the space I used for the controller  big_smile

Good luck with the touch-screen mod! Just a little question though: How will you connect the touch-controller? Solder it onto a USB-port too? I haven't found a better solution than the external cable so far...Of course the 3G-module could be connected to the touch-controller, so still only one cable would be external...

Seems like a mod I really want to do, but Belgium is like the most retardic country in the world. We are so-called forward-thinking about technology, but the country is so small we only have three mobile providers, and they overprice the heck out of their services. 3G is way too expensive (€50/$75 per month for 5Gb!), so maybe I'll wait a bit. But it's great to know it works, and the extra antenna can be put to good use  lol

well its either going to be a case of desolderin the usb from the mobo and solding the wires directly to it and then fitting a micro switch in the usb slot of the caseing or have it as you do poking out the side and just plug it in

i can lose 1 usb port and just use either  a express card with usb ports/firewire whatever really or even a usb hub so losing one isnt much of a problem.

i also thought your touch screen controller sat on top of the ram stick ? i guess i will find out when it arrives and can just go from there. i will be fitting the 3g mod to a micro switch also after the touch screen module so i dont have to have the 3g running until i need it.

there is also a pay as you go 3g sim card you can use in the 3g sticks im not sure how it would work in belgium but its got to be better than paying the extortionate rates of your 3g providers. ive seen these on ebay but havent really looked into them.

my 3g is £15 a month and has some fair use policy but the tmobile technical chap told me its pretty much unlimited. the £15 a month works out alot cheaper than paying £5/hour in a hotel  for there wifi service.

the 3rd antenna might be no good for 3g im pretty sure with a dedicated 3g antenna i will get a better signal so once i find one i will install that. i think they work on a different band than the wifi so the signal isnt great it is around 40%

Re: 3g

finally after alot of messing around with a doa arrival ebay touch screen from hong kong lol i ordered one from fido and its all installed and working perfectly \0/ im very pleased with it. it took a bit of soldering to extend the cable like darkjeric mentioned in his post but its not too hard to do.
also i connected a wireless n usb stick to the controller hub and fit that inside the screen bezel and all is good i had to take apart all the plastic from the usb stick so it was just the circuit board left over to make it fit inside. there is a space just perfect for it in the top left of the screen bezel.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Edimax-Ew-7711u … =8-2-spell

the link to the wireless n usb adapter. now it says its 150mb/s but im sure mine was 300mb/s im not 100% so will have to look it up.
