Topic: SetFSBTray 1.1.3 - Overclock your FSB from a Tray Icon

SetFSBTray requires .Net 1.0, 2.0 AND 3.5!  See N10Tray otherwise!!!

SetFSBTray (Previously N10Tray)
*Update Version 1.1.3*
-FIX-Task scheduler now works 100%.  Delete old task (can be done in-program) and recreate it.  The program will do all the work for you.
      -FIX-several other minor fixes.
      -Updated setfsb to 2.2.127.93
-ADDED--q switch to program so you never see setfsb pop up.
-ADDED-User can now show/hide context menu strip items

*Update Version 1.1.2*
-ADDED-You can now add your own clock gen's to the drop down box.
-FIX-I forgot to remove something in GP entry creator.  It would cause crash during creation.
-FIX-Added /wait to script in GP entry.  Without that trigger setfsb wont run!  Please delete old entry/recreate it!

*Update Version 1.1.1*
-TWEAK-Tasks now run SetFSB better (before the task wouldn't run on startup b/c not idle). Delete old task and re-run the creator.
      -TWEAK-Small visual tweaks

*Update Version 1.1.0*
      -ADDED-Task creation/deletion now automated!  New cleaner.exe
-ADDED-Installer runs tray icon after completion.
-ADDED-Updated SetFSB to newest version.  3 New clockgens.
      -FIX-GP creation disabled if gpedit.msc doesn't exist.
      -FIX-Better error checking
-FIX-Registry keys for GP entry wouldn't delete
-FIX-Cleaner could crash if GP entry's registry items not there.

*Update Version 1.0.6*
-FIX-If user said no to entering registry entries in GP creator, then when you go to delete the entry the program will crash.
-FIX-If your didn't change the stock FSB from 200 when first creating settings and you save, the program wont run and you will need to delete settings.txt.

*Update Version 1.0.5*
-FIX-Overclock.xml generator had issues with paths that had spaces in them (it created the file just fine, but the task didn't run setfsb).  It will work wherever you put the programs now.

*Update Version 1.0.4*
      -forgot to add a file!

*Update Version 1.0.3*
-FIX-Added more file/folder checking.  Specifically ones related to scripts.ini
-FIX-updated cleaner, because it had the same issues at the main program in regards to scripts.ini
*If you have problems uninstalling download the new cleaner.exe to your program folder and try again
-FIX-Found more problems with the GP creator.  If you haven't added a script to your computer's GP before, the program wouldn't work.  Try deleting you old GP entry and then re-creating it.  Read the msgbox.

*Update Version 1.0.2*
-FIX-Fixed possible crash if you don't have scripts.ini
-FIX-fixed the GP creator.  Delete your old gp entry and recreate it.  The .bat file wasn't being  created right if there were spaces in the path.  All fixed now!
-added -b1 switch to all instances of SetFSB (hides setfsb quicker)
-FIX-installer now auto uninstalls old versions, and then installs new one.

*Update Version 1.0.1*
     -Added 1 new clockgen
-FIX-Fixed restart/shutdown buttons don't reset FSB when checked in settings.
     -Updated SetFSB to newest version
     -Small visual tweaks.

SetFSBTray has been uploaded.  It is a self installer, so install is a breeze.  Uninstall old versions of this and N10Tray first.  Delete C:\setfsb if you used n10Tray.

Once installed, open the settings window, click on settings on the menu bar, and then choose "Enable Overclock".  Set your system's clock generator and your stock FSB.  The n10's settings should be ICS9LPR310BGLF and 133 respectively.  Once you set your settings press save.  You should not have to do these steps again, even after reinstall.  If you need help, check out the how to under help in the settings window.

Cheers!

What can it do?
-Overclock you computer by increasing the FSB.

-3 customizable FSB settings in tray icon: low, medium, high.

-Support for all clock generators in SetFSB.exe

-logoff/shutdown/hibernate/restart from tray icon
*You can toggle whether shutdown and restart reset the FSB when you click them.  If a GP entry is detected, then the the toggle is disabled.

-You can disable and hide the overclocking buttons and just use this for the shutdown buttons.

-Add a script to the GP.  This will automatically run SetFSB on shutdown and reset the clock (Use if your system hangs while overclocked).
*During uninstall these entries will be removed for you, or it can be removed with the program.

-Toggle run on startup

-Custom Overclock.xml generator.  It asks what you would like your FSB, and then opens task scheduler for you to import the file.
      *Requires manual removal.

-Extra Low(lan) button for asus n10 users.  You can toggle this on/off in settings

Old Version-N10Tray
Version 1.3 is up.  It now has relative paths for everything and you can disable shutdown/restart resetting of FSB.  You can re-use your old folder (C:\setfsb) if you want, but you don't have to.  Unless there is an error, this will be the FINAL build.  SetFSBTray is the way to go!

If you used the task scheduler overclock.xml, then download the new file that is up. You will have to edit the path of where setfsb.exe is located.  I recommend using SetFSBTray, because it can create custom overclock.xml files.

Real nice Software. Runs really good on my computer. I really like what youve done.
Only cool thing to have is the cpu temp in the bottom instead of the fireplace but I understand thats way more work.

Real nice will be using this to oc computer.

Great work no problems for what I can see.

Thanks moto4Troy.  I wish I could add that too, but I'm not that good.  I'll look into it more, no promises.

Keep your eyes on this thread!  Abo-san just sent me a beta release of setFSB that has a command line switch to select your clock generator.  It seems to be working great, but I am going to re-write the tray icon with it.  Right now it writes/rewrites setfsb every run, so the settings aren't lost.  With the command line switch the tray icon wont need to do that anymore.

I am also working on a version of the tray icon that will run on all computers supported by SetFSB, it has the ability to create a custom overclock.xml, the ability to disable the overclocking buttons (so you could use it just for the shutdown options), and the ability to toggle resetting the the clock before shutdown/restart.  I was almost done, but I am going to add the beta build of SetFSB to it (which is a major change).  roll

Re: SetFSBTray 1.1.3 - Overclock your FSB from a Tray Icon

I am using Windows XP,  but not sure if this will work for Vista. It will effectively reset your FSB on shutdown without having to go through the N10tray utility.

I posted this in an earlier thread, but will repeat it here:

Open your favorite text editor - windows notepad will work fine.

Copy and paste this into your notepad (of course editing the path for your setfsb dir):

C:\[YOUR SETFSB PATH]\setfsb.exe -s133 -w00

save it as 'setfsb_shutdown.bat' or whatever file you want to as long as it has a 'bat' extension. Create a shortcut to it on your desktop if you want for manual change.

Now do the following:
1) Start, Run, gpedit.msc
2) Select Computer Configuration, Windows Settings, Scripts (Startup/Shutdown)
3) Double Click Shutdown
4) Click Add, and browse to the script (setfsb_shutdown.bat)
5) Click OK, and OK again.
6) Close Group Policy and Restart Computer.
7) The script should now be run on shutdown and set your FSB back to normal (133MHz).

Maybe this can be adapted somehow for shutdown instead of having to use the N10Tray utility (in case you forget or whatever). It works fine.

Re: SetFSBTray 1.1.3 - Overclock your FSB from a Tray Icon

You should definitely switch that utility so it does it in the background using command lines that will make things so much better wont have to wait for set fsb to open up. Just a command line and bam finished. If anything you should release an update just to get rid of the setfsb gui to pop up. Right on for the great work. I seen some source code on the download site. Is this up to date source code or is it just a sample havent looked in to it much. What program you using to program it
Visual Basic ?
C++?

Great work Draves
Thanks alot man.

Cant wait to try out the next release.!!!

I am running vista, and it does work.  Thanks for lettings all of us know about this.  I never knew that you could run something through there-and it was something I have wanted to do.  I looked into how it works more and found that I can put this into the next version of the program.  It will have to check current settings, add two registry entries, and edit a file.  Easier said than done.

Umm...I was messing around and don't recommend using GPO to overclock on startup.  It does work on startup, but only on startup.  There is no was to use GPO to run a script on workstation unlock/etc.  Thats a problem because the FSB resets after sleep/system lock.  Just use a task (because if you have a task and use GPO they may conflict).

moto4troy wrote:

moto4troy- you really know how to ask the impossible of me.  I have tried everything to hide SetFSB, but I can't get it to work.  The command switches cause SetFSB to open; there is no way around it.  I will get in touch with abo-san again and see if he can do anything about it.  I would try to tackle it, but like I said before, I would need to know Japanese to edit SetFSB.  You could make SetFSB invisible on startup (only, not logon) by editing the task I made.  You would have to click "change users or groups" enter your user name, and then select "run whether the user is logged in or not.

The reason I mention the command switches before was because he added a new one in the beta build he sent me.  The new switch is "-cg[Your clock gen]".  This is great for the program because then I don't need to have the program re-write setfsb.exe on every run (this was done to prevent system hangs due to lost settings).  I'll include the beta in the next version.

Oh yeah-The program was made with vb.

Re: SetFSBTray 1.1.3 - Overclock your FSB from a Tray Icon

Ah even the command lines open up setfsb  ah that sucks.

This program is still super helpful makes ocing much quicker and painless.
Hopefully the author could send you a command line version only to avoid the gui but other than that this program is set to start up on my computer and I will be using in until you update it lol.

If only life is more simple.
Great work. Dont lose sleep over this program.

Thanks and keep us updated if its not to hard .

You will do your part to change our n10 lifes

( I am using windows 7 and it runs fine. )

Re: SetFSBTray 1.1.3 - Overclock your FSB from a Tray Icon

I thought of another thing you could do for this program thats pretty easy. I was testing just today how much we can drop the fsb before it looses stability.  I got my cpu down to 650 mhz I dont know how much battery life that would save but maybe the people that want every extra minute from there n10 that they can get. Would be another cool feature to throw in . Gona test how it affects battery life tomorrow.

Yeah that would be an easy change compared to the crap I have been doing.  In the next release I will expand the sliders.  In my experience, underclocking the FSB can cause hell on system stability, so in the previous releases I set the stock as the lowest value for the sliders.  I guess it is another one of those use at your own risk things.

I've been making some progress!
~What I've changed so far~
I have all of the code written to add a script to the GPO.  This will automatically run SetFSB on shutdown and reset the clock.  And wow, this was not fun code to write.

You can disable and hide the overclocking buttons.

I added support for all clock generators (you'll see).

The next release will be an .exe instead of whatever it was before.

Added ability to add shortcut to startup folder.

Added custom Overclock.xml generator.  It asks what you would like your FSB, and then opens task scheduler for you to import the file.

I removed Low (lan)-three settings are enough.  I will write code to detect the n10's pll and then auto set the low setting to 139.

There is better detection of settings corruption, and it informs the user.  If settings missing/corrupt it hides the overclocking features.

Added logoff

Added about form.

Added a menu bar

Added "Save and Exit" and "Save"

Added "Delete Settings"

New name:  SetFSBTray.

Fixed a bug that if you click the buttons too fast the program may crash.

~Still Working on~
I haven't even started to add comments to the code.

A new web page/how to

Auto detecting entries in GPO to disable running SetFSB when clicking shutdown/restart.  Also need to do this for the GPO creator, so the user doesn't make multiple entries.

auto detecting if SetFSB is there, if not recreate it.

Auto detecting other instances of setfsb.exe in the GPO to prevent multiple instances.

Making everything relative paths...almost done.  You'll be able to move the folder around!  And it will run on those weird systems that aren't on the C: drive, or with a renamed Windows folder.

I should write the code to delete the GPO script entry.  Or I could just inform the user of how to delete it manually.  Maybe in a future release

I should write an installer and uninstaller...I don't really want to though

Requests?
eta early next week

I like the lan low it was a nice setting to have I would keep it. Other than that guess we are all waiting for your next version.

Your software is really nicely made. It lets us make the best of our n10.  Everybody with an N10 will have this software on it. Asus should make it go stock with the laptop lol.

Re: SetFSBTray 1.1.3 - Overclock your FSB from a Tray Icon

Hello!

This tool looks great !

I installed it on my n10j (default french Vista, no custom things yet smile )
but I cannot launch setFsb with the stock, low, low (lan), medium, high links through the n10tray menu...
Clicking the item does nothing (cpuz still displays 1596 mhz).

Though the restart, shutdown and hibernate buttons work correctly.

Are there any steps I could have missed ?

thanks.

Re: SetFSBTray 1.1.3 - Overclock your FSB from a Tray Icon

So i just got an N10J-a1 and installed the n10tray program and followed the instructions.  Maybe I just got a bad cpu for overclocking, but I can not go over 1700mhz or it crashes.  I am really bummed, does that sound normal? Could i be doing something wrong? Thanks for the help.

Re: SetFSBTray 1.1.3 - Overclock your FSB from a Tray Icon

Ok, I just installed the N10 Tray, I open up the menu, I tried the presets, but the box is greyed out and does nothing when I click it.

Anyone have this problem?

Re: SetFSBTray 1.1.3 - Overclock your FSB from a Tray Icon

My father unexpectedly passed away last Friday, so the project is on hold for awhile.  I will be back on later to answer questions and then get the next version up.

I think if the boxes are grayed out, you need to go into settings, set what you want l/m/h to be and then save.  I didn't use absolute paths in the n10tray, so It needs to be in C:\setfsb.  Next version will fix that.  Worry not.  Just check back, and you will see the new version soon-ish.
