Topic: Data Partition

Greetings! I'm new to these Forums and I've just purchased an N10 today. One of the doubts I have at the moment is the Data partition found in the hard drive.

Is it used for back-up / OS recovery purposes, or is just a complementary partition? If it's not used for recovery purposes, can it be merged with the Main partition?

Also, the N10 came bundled with a Recovery DVD-ROM. Even if I merge the Data partition, would the computer be able to recover the OS right at the initial system configurations (in other words, like if you made a clean Windows install) even if there's no Data partition?

PD: I use Windows XP as OS.

Re: Data Partition

yes, you can recover if you alter the paritions.

most laptops these days come with the HDD partitioned like that though. one for windows and primary sytem files and apps, the other for all your games and music etc. it basically means if you corrupt indows and have to reintall, you dont loose everything, since you can recover while leaving the data partition in tact. id recomend leacing it there, its a life saver.

Re: Data Partition

Well, there are some brand computers such like HP whose partitions are actually used for recovery purposes, and that's why I asked to make sure if this Asus N10 computer does work in the same way I've commented.

So even it's not necessary to merge the partition: I can simply delete its content and use it as a secondary partition for data storage. Then to recovery... isn't there any kind of hidden partition together with the Recovery DVD-ROM, by any chance?

PS: Is it necessary to do a back-up copy of the Data partition contents? There are plenty of batch files, so maybe they're helpful in case I have to recover up anything.

Re: Data Partition

(Sorry for the double post).

OK guys, I've decided to delete the Data partition and thus merge the whole free disk space with the main (and now only) partition with the use of Partition Magic.

As for the recovery tools, I won't have to worry about them because I've already spotted the hidden Recovery partition and thus I can assume it will do its task when I use the Recovery DVD-ROM which came bundled on my N10.

Said in other words, I could do the partition editing safely and without worrying on crashing the netbook on the first day. XD Now I can start getting my N10 ready.

Thank you for the advice. ^^

Re: Data Partition

ok i see what you mean now. yes there is also a third recovery partition, but this is hidden. so normal disk tools wont see it.

if you remove the recovery partition, it simply means you can only recover with the dvd. since the partition allows independant recovery by pressing f9 on startup.

but you can pretty much do whatever you want to the partitions, and as long as you have your recovery dvd, you'l be fine.
